Candle Care Instructions

Sefistikated Gemz candle care guide

Our candles are hand-poured using a patented vegan blend of natural apricot, coconut, and soy wax with natural essential and fragrance oils. Follow these care tips to get the most out of every burn.

First Burn

On the very first burn, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the vessel before extinguishing. This prevents tunneling and ensures an even burn throughout the life of the candle. Depending on vessel size, this may take 2–4 hours.

Wick Length

Before each burn, trim your wood wick to about ¼ inch (6 mm). Remove any charred or mushroomed bits from the previous burn. A properly trimmed wick helps the candle burn cleanly and evenly.

Burn Duration

Our standard candles are rated for 60–84 hours of burn time. Our mini candles (Indulgence of Elegance Collection) are rated for 20–25 hours. For best results, burn for no more than 4 hours at a time, then allow the wax to cool and solidify completely before relighting.

Avoiding Drafts

Keep your candle away from open windows, fans, air vents, and air conditioners. Drafts cause uneven burning, excessive flickering, and can push the flame toward one side of the vessel, which may create soot or smoke.

Soot or Smoke Troubleshooting

Seeing dark smoke or soot? Here are the most common fixes:

  • Trim the wick. A wick that is too long is the most common cause of soot and smoke. Trim to ¼ inch before every burn.
  • Move away from drafts. Air movement makes the flame flicker and produce smoke. Find a still, sheltered spot.
  • Don't burn too long. Extinguish after 4 hours and let the candle cool before relighting.

With proper wick maintenance and burn time, our candles are virtually soot-free.

If Your Candle Won't Stay Lit

If your candle keeps going out, the wick may be too short or buried in wax. Carefully pour off a small amount of liquid wax to expose more of the wick, or use a wick dipper to gently reposition it. Make sure the candle is away from drafts when you relight.

Vessel Cooling

Always allow the vessel to cool completely before moving it or touching it. The glass can become very hot during a burn. Wait at least 2 hours after extinguishing before handling.

Safe Disposal

When about ½ inch (1.3 cm) of wax remains, it is time to retire your candle. Do not burn below this level, as the heat can damage the vessel. To clean and repurpose the vessel, place it in the freezer for a few hours — the remaining wax will contract and pop out easily. Wash with warm soapy water. Our vessels come from renewable sources and make great storage jars, planters, or home décor.
